East Hampton Airport Noise Curfew In Effect

In response to the numerous noise complaints from sleep-deprived Long Island residents, East Hampton Town imposed nighttime curfews on all aircraft flying in and out of East Hampton Airport between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. For louder aircraft such as helicopters and larger private jets, the curfew is set between 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.
The East Hampton Town Board had originally approved the curfew back in April, but the curfew was put on hold after angry aviation businesses and pilots filed a lawsuit claiming that the town had overstepped its authority by passing these noise restrictions. Despite the legal setbacks, a Long Island judge decided on July 2 to put the curfews in effect to protect residents from undesirable aircraft noise during sleeping hours.
Along with the nighttime curfews, East Hampton is also limiting helicopters to landings and takeoffs once a week from May to September because they are deemed “noisy”.
According to court papers, a “noisy” aircraft is defined as making a racket of 91 decibels or more.
The new East Hampton noise rules come just in time for summer, the biggest travel time of the year. When booking your next trip, make sure to speak with your Private Aviation Consultant on how these curfews may affect your summer travels.
