PRIVATE-JET STARTUP
TAKES OFF IN TURBULENT CONDITIONS
Boston Business Journal
These are not high-flying times for private jet companies.
Many of the jet card and fractional-ownership businesses that popped up in recent years are experiencing turbulence from the souring economy and public backlash against corporate use of pricey jets.
It's exactly into these winds that Quincy-based startup Magellan Jets LLC is flying.
Like major jet card companies Marquis Jet and Jet Solutions LLC - which runs the FlexJets 25 program - Magellan sells cards let members reserve private flights and pay by the hour. But the company's founders are taking aim at competitors' market share with lower rates and more flexible payment plans. And the current recession, they said, fits right into their strategy.
Magellan, which launched in December, sells annual memberships for $250,000. The hourly rate for a one-way trip on a light jet during peak travel hours is $4,400. The cost using Marquis or FlexJets can run between $6,300 and $6,900 depending on the aircraft, according to rates listed on CitationShares.com.
Marquis declined to comment for this article and FlexJets didn't return requests for comment.
"If you want to go from Boston to Miami, you call us and we give you a fixed price," said Joshua Hebert, CEO of Magellan Jets. "That's your all-inclusive price. That includes ground transportation. That includes catering."
Another perk is flexibility, Hebert said. While the costs of membership is higher than at Marquis, which runs as low as $132,900, clients' money is kept in an escrow account. Funds not used for flying can be withdrawn without penalty fees.

NBAA NO PLANE NO GAIN UPDATE
Last month Magellan Jets discussed the National Business Aircraft Association's "No Plane, No Gain" campaign. In an effort to keep our clients informed, we will continue including information about the campaign in our monthly newsletters.
Recently, JetBlue began running a series of advertisements targeting corporate executives who fly privately. Ed Bolen, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the NBAA responded to JetBlue's Chief Executive Officer, Dave Barger in the following letter:
I was disappointed to see JetBlue's recent online advertising campaign. As you know, the vast majority of the companies that utilize business aviation also use commercial airlines - including yours - on trips when it makes sense. NBAA's Members purchase over $11 billion worth of commercial airline tickets annually.
However, when it comes to meeting their transportation challenges, JetBlue simply doesn't make sense for our members in a large number of instances. Here are just a few examples to illustrate my point:
-
JetBlue doesn't make sense for businesses located in any of the thousands of towns and communities your airline doesn't serve.
-
JetBlue doesn't make sense for the many companies that often need to conduct business in three or more cities in a single day.
-
Jet Blue doesn't make sense if a company is trying to move a product that does not fit in one of your overhead bins, or if the equipment is too sensitive to be checked or shipped.
-
Jet Blue doesn't make sense if employees with a company need to discuss company business while flying without fear of being overheard by eavesdroppers.
It's unfortunate to see that your ad campaign overlooks these realities, and promotes a caricature that does not represent the people and companies that need business aviation to compete and survive, especially in this challenging economic climate.
I ask that you please immediately pull your ads in recognition of the fact that they amount to nothing more than an attention-grabbing stunt to fill airline seats by maligning the people and businesses who spend billions with your airline and others each year, while also generating more than a million jobs and providing a lifeline for towns across the country. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Sincerely, Ed Bolen President and CEO National Business Aviation Association
