The Berkshires, Massachusetts

This mountainous region of Western Massachusetts is dotted with quaint villages and towns, and offers vibrant arts and farm-to-table dining scenes in addition to its picturesque rolling green hills. Visit the Berkshire Botanical Garden, hike (or drive) up Mount Greylock to see the view from the highest point in the Bay State, or take in the enchanting scenery from the basket of a hot air balloon. For accommodations, try Blantyre, a Tudor-style mansion straight out of the Gilded Age where guests enjoy the finest estate experience—with a full-service spa, croquet and tennis on the secluded 110-acre grounds, and a custom breakfast brought to their door each morning.

burlington, vermont skyline

BURLINGTON, Vermont

There’s no coastline in this New England state, but families can enjoy camping, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and more around gorgeous Lake Champlain, with more than a dozen beaches, several adjacent state parks, and the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. Aside from the Burlington area’s great hiking trails, the Green Mountain State offers “trails” that lead to a variety of delightful culinary experiences—follow the Vermont Cheese Trail to sample the state’s delicious sharp cheddar, or explore the Vermont Brewers’ Association’s multiple beer trails. Don’t forget the family fun of the Ben & Jerry’s factory tour, or a visit to a maple farm to see where some of the 2 million gallons of maple syrup produced annually in the state is made.

summer travel aspen maroon bells colorado

Aspen, colorado

Aspen isn’t just an apres-ski winter wonderland—there’s plenty to do in the summer months. The city itself offers upscale dining and high-end shopping in its downtown, but is surrounded by White River National Forest and the Rocky Mountains. The nearby Elk Mountain range in particular is known for stunning summertime wildflowers, a delight for hikers. Head to nearby Maroon Lake to see the perfect reflection of the Maroon Bells in the water, and see firsthand why they’re two of the most photographed peaks in North America. Stay at the St. Regis Aspen Resort at the foot of Aspen Mountain, taking in the gorgeous views and enjoying elevated luxury as well as the resort’s Remède Spa.

crater lake oregon

Crater Lake, Oregon

Enjoy the panoramic views of the clearest body of water in the world at Crater Lake National Park. The park hosts 90 miles of hiking trails if you’d like to see the scenery on foot, or you could take in 30 different overlooks from your car via the 33-mile Rim Drive, which circles the lake. Only Cleetwood Cove Trail, one of the park’s more challenging hikes, will get you down to the lake’s shoreline for fishing or seeing the crystal-clear water up close. If you’d like to rough it without truly roughing it, there are many “glamping” options available in the area, combining the seclusion of a tent or cabin with the comforts of civilization, like showers and WiFi.

rio grande big bend texas

Big Bend, Texas

Big Bend National Park gets its name from the large curve in the Rio Grande, on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Hike the Santa Elena Canyon Trail and marvel at the 1,500-feet-high canyon walls, or catch a classic Big Bend sunset at The Window, a v-shaped notch in the mountains, in nearby Chisos Basin. For the adventurous, there’s whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande, or mountain biking on the over 100 miles of designated single-track trails in Big Bend Ranch State Park. Stay at the nearby Lajitas Golf Resort, a boutique offering on 27,000 acres featuring an award-winning golf course, zip lines that span wide canyons, horseback riding, and a spa.

bozeman montana summer travel

Bozeman, Montana

Find out why this southern Montana city, the gateway to Yellowstone National Park, bills itself as “the most livable place.” Yellowstone itself offers hot springs and geysers, nearly 1,000 miles of hiking trails, and a wide variety of wildlife to spot from safe a distance. Hit the links at Spanish Peaks Mountain Club for a golf experience with incredible mountain views. If you want to combine the full grandeur of the great outdoors with the ultimate in white-glove service, stay at Lone Mountain Ranch in the aptly-named nearby community of Big Sky. Guests there can enjoy cozy, historic private cabins and lodge houses while ranch hands, guides, and chefs attend to their every need and curate the best of the “real” Montana for them.

summer travel big sur california

Big Sur, California

The unforgettable stretch of coastline between Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Simeon, California can be experienced via the Pacific Coast Highway, offering stellar views of the St. Lucia Mountains on one side and the rugged, rocky shore on the other. Nature reserves abound along the route, including Garrapata State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Stay at Post Ranch Inn, where a mix of private homes and guestrooms—including luxury tree houses—loom over the coast, and guests can enjoy guided nature hikes, stargazing, and garden tours.
